Independence and SEND at Mossbourne Federation
Mossbourne Federation is committed to providing high-quality education for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The Federation recognises SEND's diversity and complexity and the challenges some pupils and their families may face in accessing the curriculum and wider school life. The Federation also acknowledges the changing landscape of SEND provision in Hackney, where the number of pupils with SEND is increasing rapidly, and the local authority is struggling to meet its legal obligations and allocate sufficient resources for SEND support.
The Federation has three times the national average for Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). We are aware of the financial disincentives that schools may face in admitting and retaining pupils with SEND and the potential impact that this may have on the inclusivity and equity of the education system.
Our Vision
The Mossbourne Federation is committed to fostering independent, confident, well-educated individuals who are passionate about learning. This objective equally applies to students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Always at the forefront of innovation in educational equality, The Federation promotes independent learning and personal independence while actively discouraging dependency to forge confident, self-assured, and employable Mossbournians.
Rather than assigning one-to-one teaching assistants, we focus on enhancing the skills of ALL teachers to educate ALL students, in a way that is true to the exceptional teaching and learning approach that Mossbourne is known for.
Our belief is simple: all teachers are educators of SEND students and should be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to teach students with diverse needs in their classrooms.
SEND Support
The Federation employs specialist teachers who provide expert one-on-one and small group instruction for students with specific needs, such as dyslexia, ASD, or speech and language difficulties. The Federation regularly assesses the impact of SEND support and adjusts its practices according to each pupil's changing needs and progress.
Classroom instruction is supplemented by small group teaching and one-on-one lessons.
These sessions are used for intervention and developing skills to become independent, confident, well-educated citizens who love learning and will continue learning beyond their school years.
The Federation views SEND as an opportunity to create more effective and inclusive teaching and learning strategies that benefit all students.
Our ultimate goal is to enable pupils with SEND to become independent learners who can access the mainstream curriculum and participate fully in the school community, ensuring they can achieve the best personal and academic outcomes and life chances.
We adopt a child-centred approach that acknowledges the strengths and aspirations of each pupil. We believe that all learners should have the opportunity to follow the Mossbourne curriculum, which closely aligns with the national curriculum in primary and Key Stage 3 and sit a full suite of GCSEs in Key Stage 4.
