The Mossbourne Curriculum:
A Story of Excellence
Here at Mossbourne Federation, our curriculum is a carefully crafted story—one that transforms lives, builds character, and empowers pupils to write their own future. From the opening lines of early education to the final chapters of secondary school, every stage is designed with precision, ensuring that knowledge is gained, remembered, and applied with confidence.
Like the greatest stories, our curriculum is rich, sequenced with purpose, and grounded in the belief that every child can achieve excellence. It is knowledge-driven, shaped by cognitive science, and focused on deep understanding. We prioritise reading and language, knowing that words are the foundation of thought, opportunity, and social mobility. Through rigorous teaching and a culture of curiosity, we ensure that pupils not only acquire knowledge but retain and apply it, preparing them for the challenges ahead.
As pupils progress through each chapter of their education, they are challenged to think critically, communicate effectively, and embody the highest character. The Mossbourne curriculum extends beyond academics, offering experiences that build resilience, broaden perspectives, and cultivate a love of learning. Our values are woven into every lesson, interaction, and challenge— we actively develop pupils into thinkers, leaders, and creators who will shape the world beyond the classroom.
From mastering the foundations in primary to excelling in the EBacc subjects at secondary, every step of the Mossbourne journey is intentional, ambitious, and transformative. Pupils leave not just as learners but as authors of their own success, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to thrive.
Small But Mighty: Reading and Vocabulary at Mossbourne Federation
Here at Mossbourne Federation, our driving purpose is to increase a child’s odds of success, starting from the very foundations of their learning and development.
Reading is key to everything in a child’s life and the key to accessing our outstanding curriculum in full. We know that literacy and vocabulary are the biggest barrier to achievement, especially for disadvantaged pupils – closing the literacy gap in their early years and beyond is our biggest priority.
We use Read Write Inc. for our comprehensive Reading strategy, from Phonics and language development to building reading fluency.
In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, pupils follow the programme for 15 minutes daily in class, with children grouped according to their reading ability. The format of the lessons includes introducing a new sound, reviewing learning, practicing new sounds and applying them to reading and writing.
Beyond these small but mighty foundations, we complement the implementation of our curriculum with a wide choice of reading texts, ensuring a cohesive and well-sequenced curriculum that allows for deep and connected learning.
